Crafted By Chen Zongbao
The shi piao form is a modern meditation on the exquisite geometry of the triangle, mirrored in proportion and form in every aspect of the pots’ balance- from the triangle feet at the base to the pot body and the positioning of the lid, handle and spout. The exploration of threes is inspired by Dao De Jing: Dao creates one. One creates two. Two creates three. Three creates the ten thousand creatures. Three represents the genesis, the beauty and the power of the natural world. Master Potter Chen Zongbao’s piece reflects on this concept of three, taking the abstract form and bringing nature into it through masterful sculpture- with a handle, spout and lid that evoke weathered rocks and driftwood, while binding the pot together with bands of gold- triangles that go out like fractals, the “ten thousand” that come from the three. This pot is a unique clay- an old deposit Di Cao Qing that was roasted as a raw ore to darken the minerals before being mixed as a clay- a dark and beautiful contrast to the gold, ready to take on beautiful luster over years of brewing.
