Crafted by the Dongsa Cooperative

True zero-intervention wild tea, foraged from ancient tea forests in one of the most remote tea growing regions in the world.

The Dongsa Cooperative was founded to promote responsible stewardship of these tea forests and pass on old-school pu’er hand-crafting techniques that yield incredibly complex tea.

This is a special one-time cellar offering from our personal collection. Master Zhou sent just a kilo of this incredible tea to us in 2017 and we put it away for years before deciding to finally share the stunning, cooling complex brew.

This is an evocative tea that tastes like the place it grew. Huang Pian or "Golden Leaf" is already a rarity for the Dongsa Cooperative, something they've usually held back to drink themselves. When we visited them in person in 2017, we all sipped this together at the family workshop overlooking the Ailao Mountain Range deep in Qianjiazhai. They shared that this tea was only for guests and people they trust, because the tea market demanded buds only. Golden Leaf (Huang Pian) doesn't conform to that market standard, so they never pick it intentionally.

What they have each year is only what is separated out from their harvest, making it incredibly precious. Master Zhou loves the complexity of this tea and is thrilled to see an international audience loving his Huang Pian. We felt the time was right to share this first-ever batch of Huang Pian black tea so you can see its depth and beauty for yourself.

    • floral - marigold
    • fruit - freeze-dried strawberry, juniper
    • savory - toasted macadamia
    • texture - deeply cooling

the Dongsa Cooperative also recommends:

  • 'Three hundred to five hundred year old trees can yield only a kilogram or two at most, and are picked only once a year to encourage further growth for future generations. The flavor of trees at this age picks up more thick woody, foresty notes to balance the fruit and florals. The brewed liquor is more translucent and golden.'
