Longquan Celadon Gaiwan

This hand-finished, traditionally glazed Longquan celadon gaiwan depicts an abundant garden of blooming peonies seen through a window, a nod to the ancient scholar’s tea pavilion that shows off the beautiful variation and depth in the celadon glazing. Celadon fires highly vitrified like glass, making it a non-reactive material that helps bring out incredible aromatic depth in your tea.

    This Longquan Celadaon gaiwan includes
a bowl (碗 wan) and cover (盖 gai) and no saucer.

This saucerless gaiwan embraces the modern gongfu style, assuming you’ll be brewing either on a tea board or with a set of tea boats or decorative plates as the base to your tea set.

Indeed, the gaiwan saucer originally grew out of Song Dynasty banquet wine traditions, and stuck around to protect your hand from heat when sipping directly out of a gaiwan.  With modern gongfu, however, we pour from a gaiwan into pitchers or directly into cups, making the saucer less critical in contemporary teaware design.
