Verdant Tea

Mao Xie, or Hairy Crab, is the native cultivar to Daping. The village is extremely proud to be a birthplace of Maoxie varietal, and Master Zhang is excited to share this tea. Grown without pesticides and nourished with natural canola flowers for fertilizer, this tea is uniquely savory and creamy in a way that Tieguanyin cannot be. By growing Mao Xie alongside Tieguanyin, Qilan, Rou Gui and other varietals, Master Zhang can achieve a more biodiverse tea garden yielding healthier plants and better flavor quality. 

This is Master Zhang's absolute highest designation competition-level Tieguanyin, a rare allocation that we are pleased to offer for the first time ever. Most years Master Zhang is unable to set aside a traditional-finish Special Grade, as it requires a perfect alignment of weather, deep-rooted old-growth tea bushes, and perfect craft. Any special Grade designation from Master Zhang must meet his serious standards in terms of having the longest aftertaste, tingling, electrical after-sensation, juicy, mouth-watering sweetness and enveloping aromatics. When a picking is a candidate for meeting these standards it is set aside for full traditional hand-finishing, and even when completed, is only called Special Grade if the result warrants this rare label.

Daping is the birthplace of the Maoxie (Hairy Crab) varietal, and the village is proud of its heritage. Master Zhang is one of Daping's foremost craftsman of traditional Anxi oolong processing, and as it is his favorite way to finish his oolong teas, it only makes sense to show off the subtle and more savory finish of traditional roasting on this varietal. The darker traditional finish brings out unique sweetness that are hidden in a greener finish.

Master Zhang is a true innovator. He doesn’t make tea to follow trends. He experiments and takes risks to make tea better for the generations to come. This Original Wulong Revival uses the older Ben Shan varietal leaf and undergoes three times more careful hand turning and fluffing than modern Anxi oolong. For finishing, it is loosely rolled in the oldest style of oolong making that is half strip style and half ball, with many of the leaves more strip-style than rolled. Master Zhang describes the shape as a dragonfly. This hand processing and shaping yields a different tea - a genre of its own outside of Wuyi style, Guangdong style or Anxi style. The light roast is rewarding and brings out a unique savory sweet complexity we don’t see in other teas from Master Zhang.

This beautiful experimental tea from Master Zhang brings together the deep complexity and lingering aftertaste of his full day turning and fluffing process required for Revival style, and the luscious sweet floral aromatics of autumn Ben Shan varietal. Master Zhang’s Ben Shan bushes were planted by his grandparents on some of the highest slopes of the family’s mountain plot above Daping Village. Their deep roots take in water from a sweet mountain spring running under the rocky soil, bringing big texture and lingering sweetness to compliment the intensive finishing. The “dragonfly” shape unfolds beautifully in a gaiwan over many steepings.

Li Xiangxi works with her brother and cousins in the Wuyi Ecological Preserve to harvest this propagated-from-seed Xiaozhong varietal leaf and process it using traditional heap oxidization techniques and curling to bring out the tea’s natural complexity. Grown on a hillside in a ravine that collects a pocket of natural mist all morning, the tea buds slowly, yielding an incredibly sweet brew. The tea picks up mineral texture from the rocky volcanic soil and the natural spring water running through the Li Family’s plot. Deeper complexity comes from the natural genetic variation of allowing their Xiaozhong tea to grow from seed instead of cuttings, creating a rich multi-layered taste experience.

The iconic chocolatey and malty Laoshan Black Tea. This hearty rich and malty northern cool-climate tea is hand-picked, fully oxidized, rolled and fired in a family workshop. The He Family brings out notes of chocolate brownie, cinnamon, cherry and honey.

Hand-Twisted Craft Black Tea. First flat-pressed, then hand twisted, Laoshan Gongfu Black is a difficult finish favored by the He Family to bring out sparkling minerality in their tea. This spring tea has notes of rose, caramel flan and tropical citrus.

Laoshan Roasted Oolong is the most technically-demanding and labor-intensive tea that the He Family produces. As one of the first people in Northern China to take on oolong craft, Mr. He is defining the flavor and value of this new tea for the entire region. He starts with tender hand-picked leaves from his mountain-spring fed ocean-facing plot, and allows them a full two days to oxidize before beginning the critical kneading and shaking stage that brings out deep rich fruit and florals not normally present. These flavors are locked in with a heavy roast for a tea with the satisfying body of Laoshan Black but with the subtlety of the fine oolong.

Laoshan Green Oolong takes the beautiful mineral-forward green bean profile of Laoshan Green and gives it an astounding depth and complexity through meticulous labor intensive craftsmanship. Mr. He starts with sweet rich fresh leaves, then kneads and shakes the leaves to bring out rich florals and fruity undertones. Heat locks in the green quality of this tea before it can oxidize, yielding a fresh pure and honest expression of the unique flavor of the region. The He Family's special combination of green tea and oolong finishing lock in fresh bright vegetal notes, while accentuating deep tingling minerality and building a luscious fruity floral oolong undertone.

The green tea loose leaf classic from Laoshan, hand-picked in the He Family’s organic mist-shaded fields and packed with creamy green bean flavor. The He family's signature green tea is fed by mountain spring water, picked by hand, and cultivated sustainably using traditional chemical-free farming techniques including growing rows of soybean between rows of tea to restore nitrates to the soil. The extreme northern climate means cold winters and short growing seasons, but the He Family perseveres, protecting their tea in greenhouses over the winter. The result is a deeply sweet and delicate green tea unlike any other in the world.

The hand pulled and twisted finish on this classic spring harvest shows off the delicate deep-green buds that the family picks with so much care, cultivating with sustainable chemical free farming, and fed by sweet mountain spring water.

This tea is the earliest curled Laoshan Black from the He Family of 2025 - carefully crafted with hand-picked early spring shade-grown buds. After picking the buds are oxidized slowly to bring out sweet, chocolatey flavor. The He Family is offering this early Laoshan Black harvest to show off the wonderful flavor that their craft in roasting and oxidizing brings to tiny budset Laoshan tea. The stored sugar and nutrients of these early "Da Peng," or shade-grown pickings has more sweetness and lingering aftertaste than later harvests. 

Mr. He's pride and joy, this limited harvest is the very first picking of the year after the greenhouse shade coverings are removed, exposing the tea leaves to the first gentle sunlight of spring. The buds form slowly under the shade coverings over cold nights and cool days, building up sweet depth and rich texture, and then spend just a day or two exposed to the ocean mist and sun, taking on incredible complexity and textural depth. Only a few pounds of this reserve harvest were picked and finished this year.

These little buds and leaves grew under the protected shade and cold weather of early spring, but were then allowed just a few days of direct sunlight to kickstart the deep flavor and texture that defines Laoshan as a region. The flat-pressing process that Mr. He uses to finish this fresh spring harvest is inspired by Dragonwell green tea. She loves the long delicate twisting technique for the way the leaves dance in a glass pitcher as they unfold yielding a delicate nuanced brew that lasts over multiple steepings. The hand pulled and twisted finish on this early reserve harvest shows off the delicate deep-green buds that the family picks with so much care, cultivating with sustainable chemical free farming, and fed by sweet mountain spring water.

Mr. Cheng preserves some of the region's oldest and most renowned styles in his workshop, like this unique flat shaped Liu An Gua Pian. This was a tribute tea in the Ming dynasty and added to China’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage list in recent years for its utterly singular look and flavor. This tea is uniquely made with leaves instead of buds. The leaves themselves are carefully trimmed to remove any trace of stem to control for flavor and texture and to eliminate astringency. Its higher heat firing brings deep nutty flavor and sweet drawn-out aftertaste.

The culture of Huangshan green teas is all about showing off the most beautiful leaves and buds in the cup, and this Jing Xian Lan Xiang Green is no exception. The tiny slender buds unfurl with a delicately evocative and cloud-like orchid fragrance. Made from the rare Lanxiang No. 1 varietal, this tea is full of complex notes of daffodil, fenel, and chervil.

Mr. Cheng’s curled Mao Feng is made from the same buds that he uses for the more famous Huangshan Maofeng. Where classic Maofeng is a flatter style where the bud shape is preserved, the curled shape of this Maofeng produces an entirely different tea. Mr. Cheng personally loves this curled process, which takes significantly more work. The result isn’t always valued as highly in the domestic market since the shape of the buds is not preserved, but the benefit is deeper, richer, creamier flavor that comes from the extra care and processing.

This special grade offering from the Cheng Family is actually a newer style of tea, first pioneered in the 1990’s for its floral aromatics. Huang Shan Mao Jian takes advantage of the mountain’s big temperature swings and the biodiverse landscape for a brew that has all the clean crisp elegance you’d expect in a buddy tea, but with a deeper, more cooling complexity that reflects the character of the mountain itself. While this may be one of their most labor intensive teas, the Cheng Family is proud of the deep rich flavor and texture with notes of peony, semolina, and cardamom.

Huoshan Huang Ya is one of Anhui’s most famous teas- first appearing in the Han Dynasty, and listed as an official imperial tribute tea in the Tang Dynasty. This special delicate reserve level tea is made by covering the leaves before they are fully dry but after they are heat fixed to trigger enzymatic changes that bring out deep rich flavor and texture in the finished buds. The Cheng family’s high elevation harvest from their biodiverse pristine mountain plot is packed with notes of cucumber and watermelon, daffodil, steamed bun and toasted fennel.

This bundle includes eight 25g bags of famous Qimen black teas and Huangshan green + yellow teas for 200g total (about 40 sessions). Dedicated craftspeople and farmers, the Cheng Family has a beautiful, high-elevation plot above Guixi Village, an excellent micro-climate for Qimen Black Tea in Anhui. Master Cheng picks the tiny buds and young leaves for his family's teas at the very peak of spring and finishes them by hand in his tiny workshop, coaxing out complexity and the underlying minerality of rocky Huangshan.

The Cheng Family's pristine, high elevation plot near the famous Huangshan yields nuanced, complex, mineral-driven teas. The Cheng family picks the tender buds for this Ding Gu Da Fang green tea at just the right moment of early spring and instead of giving them a Mao Feng style finish, they carefully press the leaves flat in a wok. Ding Gu Da Fang is arguably China's earliest flat pressed style, bringing out more crisp texture and rocky minerality compared to the Mao Feng form. As it brews, the tea comes to life with unique notes of peony and cherry blossom florals, juicy lychee, delicate green chervil, and complex sarsaparilla root.

The iconic Houkui style, inspired by Taiping Houkui, these leaves are picked from a more remote, pristine and perfect terroir than their famous namesake. This flat pressed style is all about the beauty of the leaves unfolding and the drama of presenting the tea before brewing. Houkui green tea has always been a famous tribute tea, even in modern business gifting or new year gifting since its value is so stunningly apparent even before the first sip.  The finishing style yields a rich brew that almost leans towards the sweet green flavor of a fine Japanese Gyokuro, but with the restraint and minerality that can only come from hand picking in the rocky mountain soil above Guixi.

The famous Huangshan Maofeng is all about beautiful, perfect buds that dance in the teapot like silver needle white tea or Dragonwell. The Cheng Family picks their early spring buds on their high elevation mountain plot near Qimen and Huangshan entirely by hand to preserve their perfect shape, and works to quickly finish the buds with minimal heat and withering time, locking in fresh flavor and deep minerality that shows off the textural complexity of one of the finest green teas in the world.

Di Shui Xiang is a uses early, downy, and delicate spring buds, normally reserved for the famous Maofeng style, but coaxes these buds into tight curls like Biluochun. The biluochun finishing adds creaminess and depth to the texture, bringing out intense dessert-like notes and the kind of complexity that can only come from one of China's most famous growing regions, Qimen and the misty mountains of Huangshan.

Qimen is famous specifically for it's tiny buddy black teas like this one. It takes an incredible amount of labor to pick enough buds for even one pound of Reserve Qimen, but the results are so exquisite that Master Cheng shares it as his pride and joy every year. The buddy quality gives this tea a very thick feeling on the palate and potent, powerful flavor and aroma.

We are so excited to finally be representing such a talented family in world-famous Qimen after a ten year search for the right partners. The Cheng family takes their work seriously and the proof is in the tea. Their classic Qimen is packed with sweet, honeyed notes, floral complexity and beautiful malty undertones thanks to the careful picking and slow, small-batch hand-finishing process that Master Cheng uses.

The Wu Family's oldest prized tea bushes growing among wild trees, flowers and bamboo are picked once in the extreme early spring for a bud-only harvest, and then allowed to build up nutrients until they are picked a second time when delicate leaves begin to unfurl. This second harvest of buds and leaves is what makes their fine Bai Mudan- full of the complexity that later season sunlight brings but the sweetness and texture of the early cold-weather buds.

This is the Wu Family's masterpiece offering, the pride of Wuyang Village. The oldest most established wild plants, growing among rich biodiversity on a mountainside fully devoted to organic practices are carefully selected and the first budding of the year is hand-picked and meticulously finished to lock in the sweet complexity of the terroir, the early harvest nutrients, and the natural quality of the established deep-rooted bushes.

The Wu Family’s Shou Mei is deep, rich and bold - a flavorful expression of white tea, picked from later season larger leaves that are packed with the complexity that a wild, biodiverse landscape brings to the Wu Family’s old-growth Da Bai varietal bushes. The Shou Mei grows even deeper, sweeter and darker with age like pu’er, and this year, the Wu Family pressed their Shou Mei in individual single session dragon pearls to protect them for transit and long term aging.

This famous tea is grown using beyond organic green tea cultivation techniques for rich sweet flavor, incredible texture and notes of bamboo and jasmine. Situated on a perfectly-shaded mountainside, Li Xiaoping’s Dragonwell benefits from Shi Feng’s unique climate, rocky quartz soil and sweet mountain springs. Her craft captures a rare example of true Dragonwell- deep minerality, persistent sweetness and complex aromatics.

For the fifth year in a row, Li Xiaoping is sharing her new Dragonwell Black Tea! She uses the same delicate early buds as her famous green tea, hand-picked from the slopes of Shi Feng, raised on sweet mountain spring water and covered in high elevation mist to protect against sunlight. After light twisting and rolling, this sweet, rich and distinctly mineral-laden tea is then set out in bamboo baskets and loosely covered for ten to fifteen hours and allowed to oxidize in the afternoon heat. This oxidation process brings out savory malty flavors in Li Xiaoping’s Dragonwell that show the unique texture of the region in a completely different light.

#43 Varietal Dragonwell was specifically bred and selected to bud even earlier than classic Dragonwell in Shi Feng and yields yellower plumper buds that make for gorgeous steeping in glassware. While classic Dragonwell is all about rocky mineral texture, the new #43 is a crisp, bright focused experience centered around stronger flavor and aroma and more pronounced sweetness. Mrs. Li's first picking of the year is full of all the nutrients and sugars stored by the plant all winter long and offers a more complex, sweet and subtle taste experience. It has a longer aftertaste and thicker texture than later harvests. The soil is full of quartz and white sand while the water comes from natural mountain springs, yielding a flavor that simply can’t be matched outside of Shi Feng itself.

This early spring tea is all about a fine and subtle sweetness, and a long, drawn out aftertaste and crisp texture. Cool spring weather produces a small harvest of truly sweet tea. This is Mrs. Li’s first picking of the season, carefully hand-finished by her husband, Shui Huamin. Her true original cultivar Dragonwell (Longjing Qunti) grows on the mountain slopes of Shi Feng and draws in sweet mountain spring water.

This spring harvest pre-Qing Ming white tea is traditionally scented and made with Da Bai varietal white tea. This white tea is not sprayed with artificial oils or aromas. Instead, it is dried together with fresh jasmine blossoms scattered among the buds, allowing the natural aroma of the jasmine to absorb over several days into the tea itself. The process of adding fresh wild Yunnan jasmine blossoms is repeated six times over six days to get a full rich and creamy infusion that holds its intense sweetness and natural potency over many steepings. The creamy dessert-like Yunnan silver needle white tea is the perfect delicate pairing with Lincang's local luscious jasmine.

This unique buddy black tea offering from Wang Yanxin is only possible because of her deep connections in both Henan and Laoshan. Her farmer friends produce extremely tiny bud Xinyang Maojian, a fine downy showstopper of a green tea. The second picking of the year is still all delicate downy buds, but tradition dictates only the first harvest is used for Henan's iconic buddy green tea. Wang Yanxin works to rush-ship fresh tea leaves the day they are picked from Henan all the way up to Laoshan Village, where they are allowed to traditionally oxidize in the sun to make a black tea, and then finished using Laoshan's extremely honed-in roasting and finishing techniques to combine the buddy steamed bun texture of Jin Jun Mei with the chocolatey goodness of Laoshan Black. This cross-province collaboration continues to prove that the world of tea is still full of innovators, pushing the boundaries of tradition.

This spectacular high elevation yellow tea is made entirely from perfect buds, and scented with orchids for a deep, rich, well integrated flavor and aftertaste. Called Ta Xue Lan Fei  Yellow Tea, or snowy orchid Yellow Tea, the tiny buds are allowed to wither with fresh Xuelan varietal orchids and slowly absorb their aroma over several days. The yellow tea process requires a 'smothering' or covering of the buds for more complex oxidation after sha qing. These unique steps lock in a fresh flavor somewhere between white tea and green tea with all the textural silkiness of Silver Needle White and the minerality and crisp aftertaste of Dragonwell Green.

Golden Strand is one of Yunnan's iconic "Dian Hong" black teas, hand picked and carefully shaped to show off luxurious downy buds and golden color. Wang Yanxin has a longstanding relationship with a farmer's cooperative in Lincang, giving her access to this competition-grade te, with a distinctive flavor unlike Golden Fleece or classic Yunnan Golden Buds style black teas. The Golden Strand has a more buttery and rich flavor. with notes of whipped cream, graham cracker, fruit pie and clove.
