Master Zhang’s family has tended a variety of tea cultivars in Daping for generations. His tea is fed by sweet mountain springs and grows on the cloud-enveloped peaks of Anxi.
Zi Mudan, or Purple Peony, is a very new varietal developed for its intense aromatics. This 2018 autumn harvest is finished as a modern, green Anxi oolong. While the spring harvests are consistently floral, the autumn weather has tempered the those florals, with the aromatics blossoming in the aftertaste, supported by a zesty, green and energetic undertone. The tea benefits from growing on Master Zhang's terraced high mountain fields between patches of wildflowers. Zi Mudan is an example of the growing, changing industry and an exciting look at the future of Fujianese tea. While the varieties was developed for its aroma, it is truly Master Zhang’s meticulous full day hand-finishing that brings out and preserves the true potential of this teas intensity.
