Rich, sweet and creamy, Gui Fei Wuyi Black Tea is strikingly smooth and subtle, folding together nutty undertones and honeyed aftertaste. This iconic flavor is brought out by the Li family’s masterful craft, but is traced back to the unique response of the tea plant to green leafhoppers, an insect with an appetite for sweet young tea buds that resists the plants natural polyphenols. The tea plant has adapted to protect itself by producing a rich jasmine aroma in response to the attack, which in turn attracts wasps that eat the leafhoppers and protect the plant. This natural balance yields notably sweet and creamy tea, especially when it has the foundational minerality and nuance of Wuyishan’s famous microclimate.
