“Spirit Reflected in the Water” Yixing Masterwork
Crafted By Tang Xian Wu
National Master Potter Tang Xianwu is famous for the elegance and grace with which she executes incredibly difficult to sculpt forms like this one.
The hand smoothing and mathematical precision required to transition between teapot body facets so flawlessly hint at the incredible artist behind this perfect form, inspired by the impression of movement underwater- a rippling on the surface, a flash of light.
This teapot’s name “Spirit Reflected Underwater” is a reference to the Wu Yu mythical serpent - half fish, half snake: a dragon-like creature whose movement and rippling scales are captured in the stark and powerful facets of this incredible pot. Of course, the scene that inspired the pot itself is mirrored every time you brew, with the unfolding of twisted leaves in bright water.
Through her artistry, Tang Xianwu helps this myth reverberate in our everyday rituals.
Tang Xianwu has gained steady fame and accolades over the years, winning awards at every competition, so we are excited to still be able to offer her work due to a long working relationship.
The pictures speak for themselves showing off the perfect elegance of this piece, the way the facets slope into each other and even continue over the pot body, extending upward like the mythical Wu Yu.
Of course, the stunning original deposit Di Cao Qing clay will continue to grow even more lustrous over time.
