Crafted By Zhuang Yaxin

This is master potter Zhaung Yaxin’s celebration of the iconic lotus, one of the most traditional inspirations in Yixing pottery. The lotus is particularly resonant as beauty that emerges from mud, which is literally the case with fine yixing, crafted from clay settled at the bottom of aging troughs like mud in a pond. Zhuang Yaxin glorifies the beauty of the lotus with sculptural adornment along the sides of the pot, a handle modeled off of the lotus stalks that rise from the depths, and a carefully painted pond surface. The pot itself is wide like a lily pad, perfect to accommodate even big leaf tea like Wuyi Oolongs. The golden Duan Ni clay will grow even more lustrous and rich over years of brewing, revealing speckled red undertones.

    ABOUT THE ARTIST

    Zhuang Yaxin

Born to a long line of teapot masters, Zhuang Yaxin went to the Jiangsu School of Pottery Craft to study pottery in 1996. After graduation, she apprenticed with nationally recognized master potter Zhuang Yulin to refine her skills and painstakingly refine her own unique style. Over time, she has become recognized for a unique sense of abundance in her work.

In 2000, she was offered a place at the renowned Tsinghua University Ceramics Department in Beijing as a graduate student. Her doctoral project piece "Fu Shou Hu" was acquired by Tsinghua University’s permanent collection for its unique style and elegance to use as a future teaching aid and example piece.

In recent years, Zhuang Yaxin has been working on one hand to bring new ideas and a spirit of originality to her work, and on the other hand working both to collect unique pieces herself and to become part of private collections. She has been winning national level competitions, and receiving the honor of having ehr work published in ceramics art magazines, gaining favor and respect from collectors along the way.
