Tang Xianwu’s masterwork “Secret Place” is a tribute to the ancient Scholar’s Studio, a purposeful refuge from the everyday to seek creative inspiration. The scholar’s studio was typically a humble but thoughtful structure, open to the outdoors, set back from the bustling main home and filled with natural objects of contemplation. These objects were often twisted and gnarled branches, rocks that evoked mountain landscapes, or beautifully-patterned bamboo. This teapot by National award-winning master potter Tang Xianwu captures that secret and subdued feeling, that elegant but organic connection to the natural world with a geometrically-perfect xi shi pot body that transitions into mottled twisting branches at the spout, lid handle and pot handle. The dark clay itself contributes to that feeling of mystery, a rare Yuan Kuang Zi Pao Yu Sha clay that has the luster of Zhu Ni but the depth of Zi Ni and Di Cao Qing. This special clay will continue to get more lustrous and deeper with use, giving back texture and complexity with every brew. Tang Xianwu’s work comes with a collector’s certificate specific to the rare Yuan Kuang Zi Pao Yu Sha clay and a separate artists certificate with her seal, a 3rd party collector’s card certifying the piece and a picture of Tang Xianwu herself with the pot. This museum-level piece is ready for a lifetime of joyful brewing. Truly, it is hard to describe the feeling of Tang Xianwu’s work in the hand, the way it all fits together so perfectly, the balance, the pour, the way it reflects light.

Jasmine, peonies, cherry blossoms; Tang Xianwu evokes the beauty of a formal garden with this masterwork “Garden of Fragrant Abundance.” The traditional courtly garden that Tang Xianwu references with this teapot represents a dynamic tension between overflowing abundant natural beauty and the thoughtful order and intention of the gardener. The goal of the courtly garden is to capture a concentrated essence of the natural world in a microcosm, a experience that evokes inspiration in any who stroll its paths. So too with this masterwork teapot- a piece whose intense, bold formality perfectly balances the “Fragrant abundance” of the branches and flowers in relief, and the gold ornamentation, like petals in the breeze. This piece is particularly stunning for Tang Xianwu’s fire-reduction technique, yielding deep dark Di Cao Qing clay that still shines with warmth, like the long twilight of summer. This special clay will continue to get more lustrous and deeper with use, giving back texture and complexity with every brew. Tang Xianwu’s work comes with a collector’s certificate specific to the rare Yuan Kuang Di Cao Qing clay and a separate artists certificate with her seal, a 3rd party collector’s card certifying the piece and a picture of Tang Xianwu herself with the pot. This museum-level piece is ready for a lifetime of joyful brewing. Truly, it is hard to describe the feeling of Tang Xianwu’s work in the hand, the way it all fits together so perfectly, the balance, the pour, the way it reflects light.

This cup was hand-crafted by master ceramicist Huang Changfa using the same clay and glazing of Shui Ji used by Song Dynasty potters. The silver spot oil glaze that naturally forms during firing recreates the Song tradition that was the inspiration for all Japanese Tenmoku wares. Because of the hand-dipped glazing, it is rare to see hand made Jian Zhan cups small enough to be used in Gongfu tea, so this is an exciting new offering. The base is left unglazed for a beautiful contrast. Due to natural variation during firing, the patterns on each cup will be slightly different.

Zun, a designation chosen by the cooperative, means ‘reverence’ of the ancient Qianjiazhai tea trees themselves, an awareness of the human collaboration with a living tree that has existed for generations before us and hopefully will continue to exist for generations after us. The Zun series cakes use the first early spring growth from only the old-growth (500-1000 year) wild trees above the Li Family’s home high in the mountains, and accessible only on foot. The wild nature of this tea’s provenance come through as a flavor texture and aroma experience that is both reverent of its source, and worthy of reverence for its commanding beauty, full of honey and dried apricot with a hint of wild mountain tulsi, and intense textural depth.
